Sometimes you need to do a bit of exploring to discover what the right career path is for you.


Joe did just that, and today he’s loving life as a Retail Customers and Products graduate.

I took an unorthodox route to the graduate scheme

“I left college at 18 and got a job as a maths teaching assistant in a local secondary school. I did that for two years and was offered a job but decided to continue my studies. After getting a degree, then taking a year out to work abroad, I joined the graduate scheme and haven’t looked back.”

I’m supporting our customers through Covid-19

“The pandemic has taken its toll on many customers in different ways. In this regard, I’ve recently been working on an insights piece about how it’s impacted those who gamble and may have found lockdown difficult, to ensure that we’re able to offer support to those who need it most. The feedback has been really positive: it’s nice to know my work is making a difference in people’s lives."

From the beginning I’ve felt that my input is valued

“Very early on I was asked to act as the insights lead on a project with a lot of senior stakeholders. I was nervous about presenting to a group of people who were all much older than me and experts in their field, but very quickly I realised that they wanted to hear what I had to say. Knowing that I was making a valuable contribution was really reassuring.”

Diversity leads to great insights

“My team is very diverse, and we encourage inputs from all points of view. We’re spread across a wide range of locations with different levels of experience, which I think gives us an edge in developing customer insights too.”

The culture is really collaborative

“My manager is great at making sure that when we submit a piece of work, any feedback is dealt with as a team – it’s no one person’s responsibility. I love the fact that everyone is so involved and willing to help each other.”

There are so many socials to get involved in

“One of the best things is that there are lots of opportunities to get to know people outside the office. Before lockdown, I was playing five-a-side football on Wednesdays and going for team drinks after work on Thursdays. Then, there are things like mini-golf, the Christmas party and the graduate ball. Someone is always organising something: if you wanted to go to several events each week, you could.”

My advice to anyone considering joining the graduate scheme

“Do it – you won't regret it. The people here really look after you and care about your development.”
